Why does my dog keep lying on the bathroom floor instead of their bed?
Dogs only sweat through their paw pads. Everything else is panting, or pressing themselves against something cooler than they are. Tile and hardwood pull heat out of a dog's body faster than a padded bed does — which is exactly why the bed you bought gets abandoned every summer. ChillPup does the same job the tile is doing, on something they can actually sleep on.
My dog refuses to use cooling mats. Why would this one be different?
Most cooling mats are a gel pouch in a nylon shell. They're stiff, they shift and crinkle underneath a dog, and they warm through in a couple of hours. A lot of dogs test one once and never go back. ChillPup is a fabric mat — it feels like a mat rather than a bag of gel, which is usually the difference between a dog lying down on it and walking around it.
How does it stay cool with no freezer, water, or power?
The surface is a cooling fabric woven to move heat away from whatever's touching it faster than ordinary fabric does. It isn't refrigeration — it works by conducting your dog's body heat outward instead of trapping it against them. It's the same reason tile feels cold underfoot and carpet doesn't. Nothing to fill, freeze, or plug in.
How long does the cooling last?
It doesn't run down the way a gel mat does. Gel absorbs heat until it's saturated — usually two to three hours — and then needs fifteen to twenty minutes with nothing on it before it works again. Fabric cooling keeps working as long as the heat has somewhere to go, so it lasts through a nap without a recovery break.
Is it safe if my dog chews it?
There's no gel, no liquid and no beads inside, so there's nothing to puncture and nothing to swallow. That's the main reason we didn't use gel. It's still a mat and not a chew toy — a determined destroyer can wreck any soft surface — but a bad afternoon with this one means a torn mat, not a call to the vet.
Can I wash it?
Yes. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then air dry or tumble on low. Worth knowing: most gel mats can only be wiped down with soap and water, which is not a serious option for something a dog sleeps on all summer.
